Earn Your MFA in Writing in the Peace Corps

The current issue of Poets & Writers Magazine [Nov/Dec 2007] lists “nine distinctive MFA programs in writing." One of these programs is University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). And rightly so. One of the founders of this program is Richard Wiley (Korea 1967-69) and author of many great novels, including Soldiers In Hiding that won the PEN/Faulker Award in 1986.

The UNLV program has two options for writers wishing to study internationally while working toward their degree. The three-year program requires students to spend at least one semester in a non-English-speaking country either enrolled in a college or university abroad or as part of an independent study program sponsored by UNLV faculty—and complete the translation of a work of poetry or fiction. When I was Regional Manager of the Peace Corps Office in New York City, Wiley and I came up up with the Peace Corps and UNLV having a four-year Peace Corps Master’s International Program that allows students to complete course-work in two years and write their theses during a two-year Peace Corps assignment.
